As we head towards the middle of 2006 it is becoming increasingly clear that the world is facing an energy crisis
You would have to be living in a cave not to realise that all is not well with energy prices, and in particular oil.
You may be wondering why you are now paying 1.70$ or more a litre to fill your car.
The cold hard facts are we,the human race, since the early 1900s have been raised on the stuff.
In now what some people are calling the golden age of industrial civilisation, the 1990's,when the bottom fell out of the oil market and the price went as low as ten dollars a barrel,it seemed like the fossil fuel induced good times would roll on forever!
I remember occasionally having a discussion with my friends regarding the subject of petrol running out,and the conclusion always was"not in our lifetimes"or another common answer was "75 years mate,75 years away"
But really its not a matter of when oil will completly run out,the trouble starts when you simply cannot pump enough of the stuff out of the ground, and refine it fast enough to keep up with the worlds ever increasing appetite for it.
This is what is occuring now,we are at the tipping point, and in the next few years we will start to see a decline in production rates that the world has never seen before due to exhausting the overstretched oil wells around the world.
And in the short term at least there is no alternative fuel that can make up for the shortfall of the oil decline.
Now i become aware of this issue around three years ago when i saw a sign that read,www.Oilcrash.com.
Now this website was started several years ago by a guy named Robert Atack.
Before i saw this sign i was about as ignorant as 99.9 percent of the general public regarding peak oil, petrol was then around the dollar or so per litre mark and i didnt really think anything about the politics and geological contraints of the oil that was processed to fuel my car.
But that of course all changed when i logged onto the net and looked at Robert's well laid out and very informative site.
To say that it changed my whole outlook on living was a divine understatement.I realised rather quickly how disfunctional and not to mention wasteful our oil driven society really is.
A few months after i discovered the site,i did what Robert encouraged visitors to his site to do,and that was to gently tell people of this issue so they wouldnt keep rolling along in ignorant bliss, and worse when matters come to a head believe the mainstream media versions of unfolding events.Well most of my friends were pretty receptive to the news, but i cant say the same about members of my own family.
A couple of years ago now i was at a family function and the petrol price was still reasonable back then so when i started telling one of my uncles about peak oil,he said "utter nonsense, what is that site again?dont go back there, thats bullshit."
Well i suppose that response is to be expected from a guy who is high up in the evil Mcdonalds empire and has a family, house in the burbs etc, etc.
I havent heard from him lately so i wonder if he feels a little sheepish when he fills his car up now!
But of course high gasoline prices are only a small part of the bigger picture, there are literally hundreds of thousands of other products made from oil;fertiliser, cosmetics and plastics just to name a few.
So if you dont own a car and feel smug, think again!you will not be exempt from financial hardship,we are all in this together!
Well in summing up, Oilcrash.com's front page predicted oil troubles to begin to take hold from 2005-2007 onward and so far i have not seen evidence to the contrary.
I suggest to anyone reading this to pay a visit to Oilcrash.com,you owe it to yourself and your family and friends to be educated on the most serious issue to face humankind in our history!
Till next time,
Cynic Boy.
